Abi the Abbey Cat

from £2.00

DESCRIPTION

'Abi the Abbey Cat' will complement any home which appreciates both the Gothic decor and our feline friends either as a stand-alone frame or as a wall hanging. 'Abi' is also available as a print and A5 or A6  greetings card. The story on the back of the card reads as follows:

Abi the tabby cat, last of her litter, was adopted as a kitten by the minister of St Mary’s Church next to Whitby Abbey, in the hope that she would one day prove useful in keeping the building and environs free of rats, mice and other pests. She enjoyed an idyllic, if windy, kittenhood in the rectory, church and graveyard.

Her life changed dramatically one night, in the middle of a storm so ferocious that even the ghosts stayed in their tombs. Carefully crossing the cemetery from the shelter of one gravestone to another and taking care not to be blown off the cliff, Abi came across a pair of terrified mice babies, apparently abandoned at the base of a particularly solid tombstone. Feeling sorry for the little orphans, Abi ’s maternal side took over. Very carefully,  she picked them up and, one by one, carried them to the safety of her snug den in the lee of St Mary’s transept.

She has cared for her little charges ever since. So, if ever you visit Whitby Abbey and its graveyard one day (or night), and are very quiet, you might just see her passing between the gravestones with her adopted mice children.

The card has been left blank inside for your own message and comes with a lilac or white envelope. Both prints and cards come in a protective recyclable cello bag. A small hand-written message in a Celtic calligraphy style can be added to the card for a small fee if you so wish; please indicate this in the 'Personalisation' section.

PRODUCTION

I really enjoyed the process. For this type of monochrome work, I usually use a technical Fine Liner pen but this time I went with pencil - 8B 2B, B and an eraser to try and rediscover that softer, moonlit feel I'd discovered in 'Eternally'. I really enjoyed the process.

All cards and prints are printed locally at the Southside Rehabilitation Association (SRA), which is a charity which helps in the rehabilitation of adults who are recovering from mental health issues. So each time you buy from WhitbyGothic, not only are you supporting a British artist; you are also providing work for this client group.

All WhitbyGothic packaging - cardboard and bubble wrap - is recycled; postage is included in the price.

Abi the Abbey Cat

I'd been wanting to create a WhitbyGothic card with a cat theme for a while and got the chance when I returned from Dacre Stoker's Dracula Literary Tour, having taken some photos in the graveyard around St Mary's Church, which stands on Whitby's East Cliff, facing the North Sea, in front of the Abbey ruins.

I did an initial sketch or two before settling on the image you see here. Once completed, I was really happy with the result: I hope you like it as much as I do.
