Awakening, 1987

'Awakening', created in 1987, was the second of the new 'doodle' artworks that I drew during my time as a student in Leeds. It’s ‘cleaner’ than the previous artwork but once again reflects the opening up of a relatively protected, rural home life (the oak tree and standing stones which stood above the village of Sleights where I’d lived) to the influences and experiences of a more sophisticated and hedonistic urban lifestyle - the entwined bodies (bottom left) and blocks of flats (bottom right). The exposure to new experiences had both a good and a bad influence on my life (bottom right). The exposure to new experiences had both a good and a bad influence on my life (bottom right). The exposure to new experiences had both a good and a bad influence on my life left) contrasts with the skull (top left corner) and the demonic eyes, fangs and tongues (lower right).

The couple in the cave under the hill hints at security, safety and warmth – sentiments associated with the moorlands of my home whereas the female face beneath the oak tree seems to be a reference to a sort of Earth Spirit/Mother Earth – reflecting my growing interest in paganism. In conclusion, ‘Awakening’ remains lighter and more positive in tone than both its predecessor ('Timewyrm') and the one to come ('Death of Innocence'). The surreal elements seen here in the artwork continue the style of Timewyrm but introduce images - for example, the open book and sexual metaphors - that will be seen time and again in future works.
