Fragmentation, 1996

Originally drawn in 1996, ten years after ‘Timewyrm’, Fragmentation is a self-portrait, drawn at a time when I was living in France. My personal life and the relationship for which I had moved country was precarious and, in many ways, unravelling. It seemed that my girlfriend and I both had very different ideas for what we wanted our life to look like: she wanted to settle down and work towards a career; I wanted to travel and discover the world as a carefree, young couple. Our drinking and my continuing spiritual dilemma and attempts to reconcile with the God of my childhood didn’t help. This is reflected in the various disturbing images within the piece.

Many of the motifs seen in ‘Death of Innocence’ and ‘Awakening’ which had been drawn years previously, appear once again: oak trees (upper right), although now they have corpses dangling from them; the demonic masks (far left and lower right); the embryo nailed to the cross and most poignantly, the artist's disintegrating face. Notice how there is only empty space where the top of the head should be, and how a snake and claws are exiting a crack in the chin, whilst from the back of the head a demon with huge fangs opens its jaws wide.

There is so much in here: can you see the dinosaur or the hob hiding in the tree? Although is one of my darker pieces, yet there is more hope here than in ‘Death of Innocence’ – over and above my fragmented face, the hanging corpse, the couple making love - an angel prays.
