Lady Midnight

from £2.00

DESCRIPTION

‘Lady Midnight’ is available in several formats: as greeting cards, available in A6 and A5 size, as a A5 or A4 print, mounted or unmounted and as a framed print. The cards come with a lilac or white (please message me if you have a preference) envelope and both cards and prints are enclosed in a protective, recyclable cello bag. The inside is left blank.

The handmade greeting card features a mounted print of an original by the artist finished in silver ink. It is B6 in size (176x138mm) and comes with a matching envelope in a protective 185mm x 138mm cello bag.

The description on the back of the card reads as follows:

'I grew up in the ancient port of Whitby, situated on the edge of the North Sea. Just as the sea gives life, the sea also takes life. Here, I have imagined Lucy, the doomed heroine of Dracula, taking an evening stroll on the sands beneath the West Cliff, as so many visitors to Whitby do, before retiring to her lodgings for the night. The full moon, illuminating the still, midnight sea will soon bear witness to her malefic seduction by Count Dracula, the sole survivor of the Dementer, tragically wrecked below the East Cliff during a terrible, recent storm.'

The card can be used as a 'Missing You' card in the absence of a loved one. For example, if a partner is away or a child has left home.

PRODUCTION

The prints are from the Copyshop, a part of the Southside Rehabilitation Association (SRA), a business supporting the rehabilitation of those who have struggled with mental health through a catering and printing business. The printers is only 5 minutes from the WhitbyGothic studio. This is important to WhitbyGothic as it lessens the carbon footprint, thus helping to minimise pollution whilst supporting the local community.

Lady Midnight

The inspiration that led to this artwork took place over 10 years ago in 2012 at the annual Whitby Goth Weekend, UK, which as some of you know, is a celebration of all things Gothic in my home town.

One morning, I was walking down Skinner Street when I saw a lady dressed in the most beautiful Victorian dress. I crossed the road, complimented her and asked if I could take her photograph, to which she obliged.

I later translated the image into an artwork entitled 'Paean to Whitby', found here on this site, and it was from this that the greeting card and print took its form.
