Paean to Whitby

from £4.00

DESCRIPTION

'Paean to Whitby' was created in 2012 after one of the annual Whitby Goth Weekends (WGW). The first image to appear was the lady in a Gothic Victorian dress. I had seen this young woman dressed in long, flowing, beautiful Victorian dress. After asking permission, I took her photograph. It was this photograph that gave birth to 'Paean to Whitby' and that is how, in turn, WhitbyGothic began.

'Paean to Whitby' is a personal homage to my hometown. Included are many of the characters and themes which make this small, northern English port such a giant from a literary, cultural and historical perspective : Dracula and his creator, Bram Stoker; the famous Abbey and Caedmon, the father of English poetry who lived there; the Vikings with the hammer of Thor and their drakkars; the amazing art of the Anglo-Saxons; the shipping and fishing industries, represented by Captain Cook's Endeavour and the humble coble; the jet industry; steam engines, the Goth Express, and of course, the Whitby Goth Weekend as epitomised our elegant and exquisitely dressed lady in the bottom-right corner.

If you love Whitby, this is for you: not only will it enhance your walls and living spaces but impress any visitor and, if you have had the good fortune to visit Whitby, it will act as a wonderful souvenir of your travels there.

‘Paean to Whitby’  is available as an A5 or A6 Greetings Card, an A5 or A4 print, mounted or unmounted and as a framed print. It works equally as well as a Gothic wall-hanging or stand-alone frame as well as an A5 or A6 Greetings Card. The card has been left blank inside and comes with a lilac or white envelope and protective cello bag.

For the art collector, the artwork is available as an Epson archival pigment limited edition print on acid-free German Etching cotton rag 310gsm.

PRODUCTION

All the open prints and cards are printed at the Southside Rehabilitation Association (SRA) Copyshop, a local charity rehabilitating adults recovering from mental health issues into the workplace. Every sale of a card or print therefore benefits SRA. So each time you buy from WhitbyGothic, not only are you supporting a British artist; you are also providing work for this client group. All WhitbyGothic packaging - cardboard and bubblewrap - is recycled; postage is included in the price.

The limited edition/giclee print is from Chris Clack's Dulwich Printing Services in South London, a well-established local fine art printer that I have had the pleasure to work with for the past 10 years.
